Investigators from the State of Florida, District V interviewed terminated client, ‘Client J.’
Dates of Program: June 1977 through October 1977
Left program by: Termination
The investigator went to the (Name Redacted) residence intending to talk to both Mrs. (Name Redacted) and her son, (Name Redacted). When the investigator arrived, he found that [her son] (Name Redacted), was unavailable.
The investigator was, however, able to talk with Mrs. (Name Redacted) who advised that she had placed her son in the program at Straight in June of 1977 and he was dropped from it in October of 1977 for running.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) said that when her son talks about the program he gets very upset. He hates Jim Hartz and Mrs. Petermann. Her son spoke of many occasions of having not been fed or being run a lot or being pushed around and verbally abused.
Client J’s mother told the investigator that one time when her son ran from the program they didn’t even bother telling her until late the next night at an open meeting.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) felt she could never get any help from the Straight staff when she wanted it. One time when her son was on second phase she felt he was going to run and tried to tell them. They gave her a junior staff member who did nothing.
Client J told his mother that he liked the program when he first went in, but then things started changing for the worse.
Client J’s mother told the investigator that when he first went into the program he like it. Later he told her that the program was changing and he did not like the changes. Client J’s mother said that at first there seemed to be a real closeness and that it seemed to change with over time. Occasionally her son would tell her that the staff was not getting along as well anymore and he did not like that change.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) feels the program is good but it needs to be straightened out and she would suggest one way to straighten it out would be to get rid of Jim Hartz and Helen Petermann.
She told the investigator that at one point while her son was in the program her ex-husband was told by the Straight staff he could take his son into a room and beat him. She said this really upset her because she has custody of her son in the divorce court order.
Client J’s mother feels that you must do what staff tells you or else.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) feels that when you have a youngster in the Straight program you do what they tell you or else. In other words, you are required to cooperate no matter what. An example she gave to illustrate this was if one of her children were sick she was still required to be at the program. She also mentioned that she never was able to get all of her son’s clothing back and it took a week to get what she did get back.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) stated that on the date her son was dropped from the program she got a call from Mrs. Petermann who told her to come get her son or he would be taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. Since her son had never been at the JDC she did not want him to be there, so she went to pick him up from the program.
Client J’s mother heard Mrs. Petermann and Mr. Hartz telling him he most likely wouldn’t live to be twenty years old.
Mrs. (Name Redacted) advised that before she was able to take her son and leave the program, she heard Mrs. Petermann and Jim Hartz telling him he was no good. In fact, they called him a child molester and told him that people in jail kill child molesters because they are the lowest scum of the earth. They told him he most likely wouldn’t live to be twenty years old, then she heard Jim Hartz say, “I hope you get blown away.”
Mrs. (Name Redacted) feels that any good that might have been done for her son in the program was destroyed when he got this little talk from Mrs. Petermann and Mr. Hartz just prior to his leaving the program. She advised that her son had a tremendous hatred for these two people.
Interview was concluded.
